Aghughu Adolphus Arhotomhenla was confirmed on the 17th February 2021 as the Auditor-General for the Federation (AuGF) by the Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria. He had held the post, prior to this appointment in acting capacity with effect from October, 26th, 2020.
The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR) in compliance with section 86, sub-section 1 of the 1999 constitution conveyed his appointment of Mr Adolphus Aghughu as the Auditor-General for the Federation based on the recommendation of the Federal Civil Service Commission, subject to the confirmation by the Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The new Auditor-General for the Federation who hails from Edo state was born in Idima Ewatto in Esan South East Local Government Area on 7th September 1962. His educational background started at Eguare Primary School, Ewatto from where he acquired his Primary School Leaving Certificate in 1975 after which he bagged a Teachers' Certificate Grade II from St. Thomas' Teachers College Ibusa, Delta State in 1980.
Aghughu Adolphus thereafter graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Economics, a second class upper division from the present-day Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma (formerly called Bendel State University), Ekpoma in 1986, and later proceeded to the University of Benin City, Nigeria where he bagged a Master of Science degree in Economics 1997. His insatiable quest for knowledge led him in 2017 to enrol at the School of Postgraduate Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi for a Doctorate degree in Environmental Resource Management.
He has had an interesting career life. Starting as a teacher under the employment of the Edo State Government in 1980-1982, Aghughu later served as an accountant in his state between 1988-May, 1992 before joining the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation (OAuGF) as an Audit Officer I in June 1992.
Among key assignments successfully executed by Aghughu Adolphus A. are: Auditor- Project Preparatory Facility for World Bank Funded Sustainable Management of Solid Minerals Development: 2004-2005; Chairman, OAuGF Strategic Development Plan Planning Committee for 2017-2022; Chairman, OAuGF Budget Planning Committee, 2017 & 2018 and Chairman, Conference of Auditors-General in Nigeria Planning Committee 2018 & 2020.
As a trained AFROSAI-E Performance Auditor, he was focal person for the OAuGF during a cooperative Environmental Audit initiative embarked upon by the African Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions Working Group on Environmental Audit (AFROSAI WGEA) on the Drying up of the Lake Chad, as well as the cooperative Audit Initiative on “Integrating Environmental Risks in an Audit at Local Government Level carried out by the AFROSAI-E.
He is a fellow of the Certified National Accountants of Nigeria, (FCNA), a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) and also a fellow of, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria. His hobbies include gardening, driving and reading. He is happily married with children.
